The Tufts Institute for Global Obesity Research (TIGOR) announces a fellowship for research on any aspect of obesity relating to the health of underrepresented groups.
Obesity continues to disproportionately affect certain racial and ethnic groups—particularly Black Americans and Hispanics/Latinos—and individuals with low socioeconomic positions. Research directed towards supporting improvements in obesity prevention and treatment is urgently needed. Tufts University has launched a cross-university institute, TIGOR, to advance obesity science for reducing the prevalence of obesity in national and international populations. This new fellowship will focus on clinical, translational, policy, or community-based research addressing obesity in underrepresented groups and issues of obesity-related disparities and inequities. A strong mentoring committee consisting of obesity experts in intervention science, epidemiology, population health, and the biology of obesity will mentor the chosen candidate in their specialization area, providing opportunities for first author publications and collaborations. Major emphasis will be placed on gaining skills for a successful independent research career, including leading original analyses and manuscripts, and other career development activities. Although the scholar will be appointed within the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, they may affiliate with any of Tufts schools, including Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and the Fletcher School. The Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy is seeking a dynamic leader to fill the full time, academic position as Director of the Feinstein International Center (FIC). Founded in 1996, the Feinstein International Center is one of the flagship programs of the Friedman School, a unique center of scholarship, research and teaching that plays a leading role in promoting an understanding of humanitarian action among people living in crises-affected and marginalized communities worldwide. The Center leads innovative research in these areas around the globe. The Center also administers a Master of Arts in Humanitarian Assistance (MAHA) degree that is offered jointly by the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, as well as a specialization for Masters students in the Friedman School’s Food Policy and Applied Nutrition Program. The Center also provides technical assistance and training globally.
The successful candidate will have a strong track record of designing, implementing and managing cross-disciplinary research and established scholarship relevant to the work of the Center, be able to oversee grant application and research processes, and actively promote and engage in long-term partnerships with national and international funders, policymakers, and humanitarian and human rights agencies. Reporting to the Policy Director and working alongside a dynamic team of policy, advocacy, and research experts, the RPA will produce rigorous internal and external analyses, conduct nutrition modeling, and over-the-horizon thought leadership, including regularly conducting global political, financial, and program analysis across global nutrition issues. Work will include economic and impact modeling through platforms such as LiST and Optima, market-shaping analysis, donor scoping, literature reviews, evidence synthesis, and quantitative and qualitative surveys. Fellows are doctoral or master’s degree professionals with backgrounds in evaluation, behavioral and social sciences, public health, and other disciplines relevant to evaluation and CDC’s work. Successful applicants bring diverse experiences, having worked on several applied program evaluation projects in non-profit, governmental, and/or academic settings. Dr. Kelleher’s research uses telehealth-based methods to assess early development of children at risk for adverse health outcomes. The candidate’s primary role will be to manage and administer assessments for the PANDABox project, a telehealth-based study of early risk factors for autism. Double Up Food Bucks (Double Up) increases the purchase of fruits and vegetables among low-income consumers participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by doubling their dollars for more fresh produce. The program also supports local farmers by increasing produce sales. Double Up Mississippi launched in 2020 in select farmers markets, produce stands, and grocery stores across the state this spring and will run through October 2022.
